Medical Exposure Initiative

YMA collaborates with the Office of the Mayor on an initiative supporting students in underprivileged districts. Working with district leadership, physicians, and community organizations, the program connects students from underfunded districts to medical opportunities and helps them learn about the medical field.

The initiative helps students gain access to medicine and also to advocate for themselves and take care of their own health. Students receive access to health resources such as free vaccines and health education, empowering them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing.

YMA Medical Exposure Initiative for Underprivileged Schools

Objectives

Schools in lower socioeconomic areas often lack funding for extracurricular programs, limiting students' exposure to fields like medicine. Healthcare is the second most applied field in college and requires early exposure to prepare students. Our mentorship program connects students from underrepresented communities with professional healthcare providers who share their journeys and provide practical guidance.

Program Details

Professional mentors from clinics, hospitals, and research departments meet with students online. The DOE identifies underrepresented schools for participation; schools are selected by funding levels with priority for those in greater need. Mentors cover the path from high school through medical school, residency, and beyond, including prerequisite courses and the many fields within medicine. Students can shadow physicians, volunteer at hospitals, and attend mock interviews for college and medical school.

Impact on Youth

Students learn clinical skills, patient care, career planning, and gain exposure to different branches of medicine. The program builds confidence, combats the stigma that top schools are required, and covers scholarships and stress management for this career path.
